Anjanette Elligan Reflects on MLK Day

During these turbulent times, we need to recognize someone else’s humanity to see our own. We must be willing to embrace our diversity and live as one race—the human race. We need to understand how important we are to one another and how we need each other. Our diversity is what makes each human great.

Living in Atlanta, Georgia, the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King and the center of the civil rights movement, I am often reminded of Dr. King’s impact. He has inspired me to move through my life and career with a continued spirit of love, peace, and unity for humankind. Dr. King’s dream lives within us all. We have come a long way, but we have a long way to go. Change can begin with ourselves. We are all leaders in many ways like Dr. King, and we touch people’s lives every day.

As Americans celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I challenge each of us to honor this day by giving back. I have donated to my HBCU Spelman College, mentored a student/colleague, volunteered at a homeless shelter, made care bags for the elderly home, and cleaned-up a park during past MLK days. The goal is to simply do something great for your community or someone in the spirit of unity, love, and equality. This is what Dr. King inspired, and continues to inspire, every day.
